![]() SDR poses severe challenges also in analogue RF hardware design and the conversion between the analogue and digital domains, particularly in wideband implementations. Fur ther the impl ica tion s for sec urit y, reg ulat ion s and for the radio manufacture r busin ess structure will be discu ssed and the remainin g challenges and/or future projections will be commented on. ![]() The computational requirements and the available computing elements required to handle them will be reviewed. A fundamental challenge of SDR is to provide the necessary computa tional capacity to proces s the wav eform applica tions, in particular the complex and high data rate waveforms and esp eci ally for unit s with stri ct pow er - and siz e limi tat ions. Then there is a review of the challenges and existing/ ongoing work within application portability, application development, the underlying middle- ware platform and alterna tive architecture s. ’ s ’An ywa ve’ bas e sta tion app rov ed by the FC C, th e However, lately there have also been several positive signs and accomplishments within SDR, which indicates that we are getting closer to a larger- sca le ado ptio n of SDR in com merc ial prod uct s. Also the US government JTRS programme has at v arious times since its initialization in 1997 "experienced cost and schedule overruns and performance shortfalls". As late as in 2002 it was predicted that by 2006 the adoption of SDR in commercial mobile terminals would have "widespread adoption and movement to SDR as baseline design", something which certainly has not happened. The exploitation of SDR technology in actual products has evolved more slowly than what was anticipated some years ago. Thi s wil l all ow communication functionality changes and multiple uses during the lifetime of the satellite.
